In addition to developing an Open Type font, (Valiant Display) I draw these letters, which seek to explore and dissect the hand-written letter, often relating these shapes to other objects and assigning them various alternate connotations.
These images are just photographs, but I will post properly scanned images shortly. |

I drew this P fairly recently for a friend. I like how unique the shape is--it's styled after how my mother writes her name (Pamela). With a hundred different stroke widths I sought not to let this look as if it were made with one instrument as you would with calligraphy. Instead it became very fragile and reminded me of folded dough.
I can't decide if it's done or not. Your thoughts are welcome! |

| A sketch of an R that couples roundness with dramatic and slabby thicks. Mostly I like the counter of the bowl. |
| Just another sketch, drawn not too long after I moved to Melbourne. I'd been wandering around looking at all the gold rush architecture and came back to my studio and drew this F. |
| A lower-case h I made for Pip Carroll over at Ambiguous Horse. She asked several Melbourne artists to contribute to a show for the launch of her new studio and the theme was "spirit animal." |
| I drew this on a dissected paper bag. Its waxiness was nice for the color but not so nice for ink. |
| Also on a paper bag, this has been a recurring shape for me for years. It extends to capital Ds and Ps. |
| A sample of my font, Valiant Display, in progress. Being a script, there are a lot more variables than there would be with a modular font; and being mostly self-taught at font design--we did a little bit in undergrad and I took a course at Cooper Union with Hannes Famira--it's been pretty slow-going. But it's a labor of love and it will get done one of these days... Again, feedback welcome! |

| As seen in my Portfolio, some lettering I did last year for Is Not Magazine. |
